People Charter on Peace for Life
Charter on Peace has been a felt need among peace movements and peace workers for a long time. This is in recognition of two factors: one, there is a new geopolitical context at the beginning of the twenty-first century; two, most declarations on peace are from inter-state or state related institutions. The need was for a peace charter from a people’s perspective.The idea of a charter on peace was discussed at a meeting of Peace for Life in December 2005 in Hong Kong and some suggestions were formulated. In October 2006, a Workshop was held in Hwacheon, Korea. Presentations were made at the workshop on a charter peace from various perspectives. At the end of the workshop, an outline for a charter was adopted.
Objectives
This Charter on Peace is adopted with the following objectives:
- To articulate the people’s vision of peace for life;
- To clarify and redefine the context and concept of peace for life;
- To affirm the fundamentals of peace;
- To serve as a reference point as well as a guide to action for groups and movements for peace; and,
- To provide a model on which instruments for peace efforts can be built in specific situations.
